There are very few people can call themselves a Chartered Surveyor. There are approximately 125,000 Chartered Surveyors in total and most of them had to undergo training which took approximately seven years. This is divided between academic training, usually obtained at university, and on the job training with experienced surveyors on a broad range of subject areas. After this, a specialist area, or core subject, is chosen. Before qualifying the surveyor has to sit an oral exam known as the Test of Professional Competence (TPC) and only when he, or she, has passed this can they be registered by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors as a Chartered Surveyor.
As a Chartered Surveyor you have to keep your knowledge up to date in your specialist work areas. All practising Chartered Surveyors are obliged by the RICS to keep their knowledge up to date in their specialist work areas. This Continuing Professional Development (CPD) entails a minimum of 20 hours per year and has to be registered with the RICS online.
